Selling a Home Over Christmas
Selling your home over the holidays is a difficult time of year- many times people are selling their home because they have to sell- because of a job transfer or other big life changes . It is difficult but not impossible - An experience real estate agent can help you sell you home under less then ideal circumstances. If you want some more information advice on selling your home in Mississauga, Oakville, Milton, Burlington or Etobicoke- give me a call and I am pleased to answer your real estate questions.
When selling your house over the Winter- and over the winter Holidays- here are some common mistakes people make and one you should avoid.
Slippery, untidy, snow covered sidewalks and driveways.
Make sure you no only shovel your walkways- in front, sideways, etx and driveway- but it is done neatly! Not a carved out path to door and back. Not only does it look bad- and possible dangerous- it may emphasize to potential buyers of your home that it is a lot of work to maintain. Salt driveway, steps and other areas.
Unwelcoming entrance.
Big bag of salt and a snow shovel on the front porch is a no-no. Hide them somewhere.
Pots filled with dirt and dead plant. If you have large EMPTY urn or flower pots on you front porch either put way or fill with something, You can get inexpensive holiday greenery or dogwood branches to fill and make attractive.
Also consider a TASTEFUL low-key wreath or decoration for the front door.Fresh greens give a nice scent at the door. Grapevine wreath also great. Please avoid plastic Santa clings from the dollar store on your storm door though!
Christmas Explosion on the Front Lawn
No need for 3 foot high giant plastic Santa and his reindeer. Keep things at a minimum and remember that not everyone celebrates Christmas and may be turned off by over doing it. These things are fun and kids love them- but you are trying to sell your house as quickly and for the most money that you can.
If you have Christmas light- make sure they are strung neatly and not dangling off the trees. If you can - stick to one colour and size and flasy lights are over doing it.. Try using just one colour- preferably white. Many people do not like the connotation of all “red lights” so solid red lights or a red spot light are good to avoid. Promise the kids you will go crazy next year at the new house.
Scented Candle Chaos + Scent Overload
This is VERY common- having many candle lit all over the home. This is DANGEROUS. You can’t leave candles unattended. Your agent will be taking visitors around your home and can’t be there to keep an eye on them. Using scented candle are a nice touch- however most people go overboard. Consider that many people have allergies and the scent can be too much and they may have to duck our if t=its too much for them. You can use natural scents- like Christmas greenery or put a small pot of brown sugar and cinnamon with some water in the oven on low.
Avoid over spraying room fragrance all over the house .
Over the Top Christmas Decorations.
Again- not everyone celebrates Christmas. Keep the decorations tasteful and not everyone likes a red and purple Christmas tree.
If you have a Christmas tree- keep it looking neat. If a fresh tree- brown and droopy needles are not good. Water it or better yet get an artificial tree. Decorate TASTEFULLY. Consider a tasteful theme of white a gold. This may be hard for those who like to hang the kids or grandchildren home made ornaments on the tree. What you might like to do is get a separate tree for family room or kid playroom and go wild there.
Avoid Santa dish towels and matching oven mitts in the kitchen and Snowman soap holder in all the bathrooms. Really try and tome it down, Ask your agent for advice if you are not sure or when in doubt- don’t do it.

Do you live in Mississauga or Oakville? Are You planning to sell you house this spring? Are you even thinking about selling your home?
This weekend may be your last chance to plant spring bulbs. With no grass or greens in the Spring your house can look lack lustre in the early Spring months. An easy and cheap way to add some color is to plant some spring bulbs- now. This week will probably be your last chance to plant those bulbs and have some spring cheer when you go to list your house.
Some Goof Colour Choices:
Bright and light colours work best. Yellows, pinks, whites, oranges
Avoid purples and red.
Try and plant some bulbs that have a great scent- like hyacinth- near you entrance ways.
You should still be able to find bulbs at any nursery- I also noticed that Loblaws has had them in the florist section on clearance the last 2 weeks.
